Sustainable Design Project, That Apple box!!

It all starts with them pallets. Them pallets are every where and many times you can find them for free or for 2-3 dollars a pallet.

I got started by cutting the pallet with a circular saw. At first I was trying to break them apart but it was requiring too much energy. And some of the pieces were braking where they were attached with nails.

I started with cutting all the pieces then making sure they were all the same length. Then just simply screwing the four sides together.
I had enough pieces to make 7 drawers. & I like the number 7. It's my lucky number lol.
You can see they are really coming together.
I took the 4 2X4s from the pallets and decided to use them as the corners of the shelf's.
Got to clean up that trash lol.
It's funny when your working on the farm and the chickens come to visit. Yum I love chicken nuggets.
I used this old piece of wooden siding. It was very thin but I figured it would work for the bottoms of the drawers.
I then had to cut the 28 pieces for the reinforcement of the drawers.
 There they are !!!
This is how the drawer floor was attached with the reinforcement strips. It was a very cost effective way to ensure the drawers would last for a long time!!
Wow !!! Its starting to take shape.
For the frame I needed smaller pieces for in between the drawers and for the rails the drawers to slide on.  It was hard but I was able to cut the pallet pieces in half. It wasn't perfect but neither am I , lol.
Then they had to cut them to size.

This weird looking scissors were in the back of the toolbox. I'm pretty sure they weren't for cutting wood, but with some hand strength they worked.
Got to take that selfie of course. Lol

Well it looks cool, but not quite finished yet.

It was a little unstable and looked like it could fall over. So these slates were used all the way up the back side to provide that good strength. It's solid now!!

WOW, it actually worked. A storage dresser for apples, build out of a pallet. One mans trash is another mans treasure. Lol
Had to take the drawers out and give them some paint.
Red and green, they were colors left over from a old job. At first she didn't like the green but after I said we had to use stuff and not buy anything to build this , she agreed.
She was so excited to help me paint. I loved it because two can always work faster then one. And by this point I was tired. haha
Got to let that paint dry... Ugh it takes forever!!
After multiple coats of paint. It was really starting to look good!

HOLY MOLY, its amazing how it turned out. She's a sturdy as any dresser I've had. And she wasn't built in China lol.
This was a really fun project for me, I have to admit. It turned out pretty good.
And them home grown apples were so delicious!!!

I was so happy to see the family hosting me happy. They let me stay here for free in exchange for working on the Farm. I'd say I'm starting to earn my keep. Between taking care of the cows, the sheep, the garden, and my drafting and design skills. It's all coming together. All for free just for being me!!! That's sustainability at its fullest!!
